Three soldiers who are members of the Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta have been killed by pirates in a gun battle.

The soldiers attached to the Task Force codenamed Operation Delta Safe had prevented the pirates from attacking Tunu flowstation belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Company in the Letugbene area of Bayelsa State.

Punch Newspaper reported that the soldiers guarding the station had also killed one of the pirates during the gun duel at about 6 am Sunday.

The report said some other soldiers were also injured during the attack.

According to the report, the JTF had declined comment on the incident but a source was quoted saying, “

“The soldiers were deployed in the SPDC Tuna flowstation. They engaged the sea pirates in a shootout to stop an attack on the flowstation.”

It would be recalled that there has been conflict between Letugbene community and the SPDC.
